We were like children in a sweet shop. Our wide, excited eyes scanned the pampering playground not quite sure where to begin. Each door we opened and every corner we turned resulted in a unanimous ‘wow’.
Y Spa at Wyboston Lakes (England) really stands out from the crowds of average, bland spas. It is a modern fusion of tasteful colours and contemporary finishes. Stylish pink hues cascade from the shower. Before you can even rouse your relaxing limbs into even thinking about moving to the next experience room the lights have morphed into minty green shades.
The use of the spa alone is enough to send you into a blissful state. You don’t need to splash out on treatments. From the cocooned sleeping pods to the salt steam room, there is enough to keep all budgets entertained. Y Spa even caters for the fussy; there’s a hot kelo sauna and a moderate ‘softy’ one. You also have a choice of three showers (all unique in their own way) and a frost wall that results in a bit of a squeal if you have an aversion to the cold like me.
The best part of the spa is the eleven metre outdoor hydrotherapy pool. It wouldn’t be out of place on the cover of a glossy magazine. You can glide from the indoor area out into the freezing winds, enveloped in the warm waters and mesmerised by the outdoor fireplace. You really will be transported to another world, especially if you time it so you watch the sun set.
When you’ve had enough (this will take a while) make a quick dash to the cute log cabin for a toasty sauna experience. You can even watch the sunset from your new found den.
If like me, you’re organised enough to coincidentally time the spa visit with your birthday, and lucky enough to have amazing friends who will obligingly visit it with you, you may just receive a little birthday spa treatment from them. I was super spoilt with my first ever hot stone back massage experience.
You need to have this treatment. Firstly, because it means you get to wait in the sleepy lounge area upstairs. Instead of music, you listen to a crackling fire and snuggle under a fleecy blanket with a magazine. I tip my invisible hat to you if you manage to keep your eyes open for more than two minutes.
If you’re one of those people that squirms during a massage, wondering why everyone else keeps banging on about how relaxing massages are, then a hot stone back massage is for you. It is so comforting and heavenly that you’ll want to lie there forever.
By now you’re probably thinking this luxurious spa is mega bucks. Thankfully it isn’t. A Sunday afternoon spa experience, complete with a three course delicious meal overlooking the lakes cost a teeny tiny £39 each. In fact, Groupon and the Y Spa website are often full of deals and promos that are worth a browse. I’m happy that travel needn’t be a massive journey, when something as lovely as this spa is practically on my doorstep in Northamptonshire.
If you can ignore the pre-trip admin side of things (it needs to be fine tuned) and the outside of the building (it’s not particularly glam) you’ll enjoy this spa. All in our group of five have said we will be back….hopefully sooner rather than later. Exploring near to home (another traveller’s faraway) definitely has its perks when it involves pretty places like Y Spa. X
