You don’t have to act like a caveman to dine in Ali Barbour’s cave restaurant. Far from it. This unique, special and intimate restaurant is an experience you won’t forget very quickly.
Dining at the Magical Ali Barbours
Hundreds of candles adorn the cave and the star lit sky (visible from the open air ceiling) make for a really romantic setting. Meandering stairs from the ground level lead you ten metres down to the restaurant. Attentive staff wait to greet you and escort you to your small and discreet table.
Ali Barbour’s is near Mombasa (the second largest city in Kenya) in Africa. It is a secluded little cave that is thought to be 120,000 – 180,000 years old. Save for the section that houses the kitchen and the bathroom, it remains as it was found. The location in itself is enough of a reason to visit. However, the food does not disappoint and is as equally as amazing.

Dinner in the Cave Restaurant
The restaurant now offers a vegetarian menu, featuring some amazing creations. Over 10 starters and a further 10 mains. Vegetarians really are catered for, with dishes including pastas, curry and more.
Vegans are also welcome, with a couple of vegan choices featuring on the vegetarian menu. At the moment that includes a bean chilli and a curried rice.
For meat and fish eaters, there are plenty of options, including oysters, surf and turf, and roasted duck. My husband tells me the Madagascar steak is exquisite. Bold statement, I know. You can find the menu here.
When we visited a full three courses and wine for two cost us £60 and was worth every penny.
