Luxury hotels are few and far between on the island of Gozo. Five star Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz, or Kempinski Gozo as it’s often known, is one that you should pay a visit to.
It’s part of the Kempinski brand that you’ll find in many countries, but despite being part of a big chain it’s anything but impersonal. The welcome desk staff are super friendly and helpful. It’s just the kind of reception you need after a hard day of travelling (especially when that travelling involves cycling across the island with Headwater).
The hotel has a huge outdoor pool that you’ll be desperate to jump into if the heat is anything like it was during my visit in May. To prevent boredom (or something like that I spose) it also has two other outdoor pools. You’ll find sun loungers dotted about and once peak season gets going the pool bar opens up, so you hardly have to lift a finger. Birds chitter and chatter in the trees, clearly as happy to be there as the guests. It’s bliss.
The multiples continue inside. There are numerous restaurants ranging from casual to fine dining. The bar terrace is a popular spot for lunch, with healthy but delicious plates available. I hugely recommend the pitta, hummus and tabouli. There are also naughtier temptations on offer – just saying.
Kempinski Gozo is home to one of the largest spas in Europe. There are two indoor heated (debatable) pools, with Jacuzzi, sauna rooms and more. Forget the pools and book an indulgent treatment. They’re pricey, but there is such a huge variety on offer (European, Oriental, and Indian) that it’d be criminal not to try at least one.
If you are watching your pennies though, head up to your room and have your very own spa bath. The complimentary toiletries smell of gorgeous flowers. The junior suites have recently been renovated and enjoy generous bathtubs, rain showers and bathroom speakers so you can play your favourite music while you relax.
The Junior Suite
The junior suites also have a lounge area, with a TV that has plenty of channels in English. Although you’ll want to spend your days by the pool in the sunshine, it is nice to be able to watch a film in the evening after dinner. The massive bed in the suite is heavenly. If it wasn’t for the temptation of breakfast you’d probably want to stay in bed forever. The omelette station, Nutella pancakes and lots more are all too much to resist.
You can see one of the lovely junior suites for yourself with this #TravelTrailer video…
Big thanks to Headwater for hosting my stay as part of a cycling holiday in Gozo. Click the link for more info on a similar package.
