If you want somewhere modern, affordable and central in Brussels (Belgium), Hotel BLOOM! is the one for you. This arty design hotel sits perched above the former orangery of the National Botanic Garden of Brussels. Peeping through the curved wall of glass, you see sweeping romantic murals that draw you closer and closer. Turning the corner to the edge of Hotel BLOOM! you’re soon distracted with the sight of a retro yellow campervan in their very own restaurant.
Yes, this hotel has bags of character. Expect the unexpected, for the stylish lobby is met with floating perspex seats, and the lift is decorated with bloomin’ definitions. In fact, before you even arrive at the hotel you’re offered the chance to embrace your creativeness by picking a piece of art that will adorn your room. Abstract shapes, impish fantasies, and minimalist tones (to name only a few) just fuelled my indecisive and ever-changing mind, so I opted to leave it to chance and see what room I was given.
It was to be floral fantasy; an unusual fresco that framed the generously large double bed. Accompanied by an insight into the creation, I’m sure you’ll love reading about the artist (they’re all European art students). Each room has a different design so even if you stay more than once you’re bound to see a different side to Hotel BLOOM!.
The rooms are spacious and are definitely geared to the modern traveller. Take advantage of the coffee machine (just make sure you buy the refill pods at the supermarket across the road rather than in the hotel), or rest your legs on the lazy chair and enjoy the big TV. I know I certainly did after exploring all of the foodie stops in the city.
The bathroom is equally spacious, but not particularly glam. However, it is clean, the water is hot, and toiletries are provided. What more would you want for an affordable hotel? If you’re a bit of a lux traveller and you have room in your luggage, you might want to bring a fluffier bath towel.
The Best Bit
The ultimate stand out winning feature of Hotel BLOOM! is one of their restaurants, OO!. You can enjoy an amazing memorable breakfast here. Are you ready for this? You can make your own gaufres. It’s the best thing ever. Fact.
Pop the mixture into the machine and spend the next few minutes eyeing up the topping station (knowing that you will pile allll of them on), and enjoy the sweet smell of waffle wafting around you. Then skip on over to your table with your tasty creation and repeat three or four times.
When you feel suitably stuffed, head on over to the fresh fruit and yoghurt for one or two of your five a day. Oh, and while you’re there you might as well sample the cooked breakfast, and the freshly glazed pastries. I mean, they don’t call it a buffet for nothing. You’ll need to try the herbal teas too, and it would be rude not take advantage of the take-away cups for a hot chocolate for the road.
Pst. Do you want to know a secret? You can even enjoy this feast of a breakfast if you’re staying elsewhere. It’s not the cheapest, but the quality (and quantity!) is worth every penny. You can also enjoy their other restaurant, Smoods, and choose to sit in the section that best suits your mood. I couldn’t decide between Passion or Bazaar.
Hotel BLOOM! is great if you’re on a mid-range budget (rooms from 69 Euros), but you still want something that’s different to the cookie-cutter hotels. It is a handy location in the city, the staff are friendly, and there is reliable free wifi (the blogger’s dream!).
If your room is at the back of the hotel you might want to leave the thin drapes over your window so you don’t have to look at the unsightly block of flats. However, with a room full of gorgeous art I’m pretty sure your view will be just fine. Hotel BLOOM!, I’ll be back…I have a very important meeting with a Mr. Gaufres. X
