Haycock and Tailbar in Northampton is a secret cocktail and supper bar.
Well, I guess it’s not really a secret anymore. Sorry, Haycock & Tailbar Associates. You won’t tell, will you?
This bijou spot specialises in stylish cocktails and steaks. It’s a bit of an eclectic combo, but it’s a pairing that seems to be working.
Dining at Haycock and Tailbar
The food at this place is very meaty. It specialises in steaks, so whilst you can enjoy a classic rump steak, you can also get a bit more adventurous and try something a little exotic. Choices include crocodile tail fillet, moose haunch, horse fillet and lots more. Various dips are available, as well as indulgent sides to accompany your steak, such as baked chorizo sausage or prawns.
If you don’t want a big meal, you can opt for bar food, such as Jamaican sweet and sour chicken or five meatball lollipops.
Looking for a bargain? If you go for a midweek visit (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) you’ll often be able to enjoy the fixed price menu, meaning that you can enjoy three courses for just £19.90, which includes an 8oz beef rump steak.
To add to the excitement, the mains are served on Black Rock Grills. They’re basically lava rocks which are heated to 450 °c to enable you to cook your steak to perfection.
The desserts are equally over the top, with the bonfire marshmallows proving a popular choice. Chunky marshmallows are dusted with sweet treats and served to the table, ready for you to toast over an open flame at your table. You even get a few biscuits so that you can make delicious s’mores.
If you’re a fellow vegetarian, this really isn’t the best place for you to dine in, but the cocktails are great so head here for a drink. Just be aware that it can get a little smokey down there, as in meat smoke..!
Drinking at Haycock and Tailbar Northampton
The massive menu of original and glamorous cocktails will have you musing for a quite a while.
Prices start at £9, so with their fresh and fancy ingredients (only the finest liquors are used) I think you can get away with sampling quite a few. You know, for research purposes.
We started with a Flower Child (elderflower, mandarin, jasmine liquors, mixed with prosecco), French Correction (chambord, vodka, and shrubs – yes I said shrubs), and a Rose Royce (prosecco, rose petals and rose syrup). The Rose Royce won the first round hands down.
If you ask really, really nicely, the handsome chaps at Haycock & Tailbar will even create your very own cocktail for you. Just don’t ask for a Sex on the Beach or a Woo Woo.
If you’re into an Old Fashioned you’ll love this place. You can create your own by choosing your ‘poison’, bitters and sweetner from the extensive menu. You can even upgrade it by adding one of the many smokey wood chip treatments.
Finding Haycock and Tailbar Northampton
To the naked eye you probably wouldn’t even notice this cocktail and supper bar. There’s no neon sign or even an indiscreet one. It’s simply a doorway that only the select few know about. Ring the bell and wait to see who appears (and where)…we were so shocked when what we thought was a wall opened up as an entrance.
Ignore the shabby décor of the hallway and head straight down the stairs to the more stylish excitement in the basement. It’s a very cool place, so of course the lights are very low.
Whilst there’s no dress code, I’d recommend that you put your party clothes on and make a night of it just like we did.
Just make sure you book a table – it was fully booked the evening we visited. Northampton is only ninety minutes from London and about an hour from Birmingham, so if you’re heading to the town make sure you visit.
