Clift Hotel in San Francisco has two sides. Downstairs it’s dark and sexy, cool and sleek. Upstairs is the polar opposite. It’s gentle and serene; a calm retreat from the lively streets of the city. Located just minutes from Union Square, this luxury hotel is right in the hustle and bustle of San Francisco.
The Lobby: Glamorous and Cool
Locals flock to the hotel’s well-loved and historic Redwood Room for evening cocktails. The ground floor always has a hushed excitement about it. The open fireplace in the lobby attracts a steady flow of visitors, as does the oversized chair. The coffee table by Salvador Dali must have also been pictured by at least a hundred admirers per day. It’s fair to say it’s all going downstairs, but more about that on the next #SundayServed (and/or in the #TravelTrailer vlog at the end of this post).
The Rooms: Calm and Serene
Entering the cosmic lift to your room is like being transported down (or I guess up) the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland. It’s another world. A world of violet walls, perspex chairs and oversized mirrors. Huge corridors lead to purple staircases and even more shades of lilac. It’s as if you’re Alice when she nibbles that biscuit and becomes a giant.
It’s ideal really because the suites on the eighth floor are appropriately matched. They’re spacious; full of cupboards and wardrobes for hanging enough clothes to last a month. There’s a desk area, a lounge area, as well as the obvious sleeping area. It’s not until you slip into bed that you then start to feel like Alice when she sips the potion that shrinks her. The bed is huge – so huge that it’s worth trying to hide in there to avoid checking out!
With a sofa positioned to watch the TV and a perfectly colour coordinated throw for snuggling, it’s all too easy to get comfortable. Looking out at the rooftops of the city makes you feel like you’re in a protective bubble of quietness. It’s so welcomed after a busy day of sightseeing or a big night in the Redwood Room. The buildings are really beautiful. You’re almost transported to the Parisian streets that are filled with similarly gorgeous architecture.
The contemporary orange bedside tables and coffee table give a nod to the edgier side of the hotel, but the bathroom is probably the closest link to downstairs. It’s dark and a little more masculine. It also airs on more of the cool side thanks to the rum bar soap and the peppermint shampoo.
For those of you who also hate to be categorised or forced to choose just one type of hotel, this place is perfect. Have a sexy getaway as well as a peaceful retreat. Don’t believe me? Check out my #TravelTrailer vlog…
