The Best Restaurants in Northampton
1. Fox and Hounds Harlestone
This is my go-to pub restaurant whether I’m eating out with friends or family. The décor is modern rustic (and recently updated) and the food is always great.
There’s a dedicated vegan menu that I’m currently working my way through, but I’d highly recommend the spiced coconut curry with sticky jasmine rice. Vegan food can get a bad rep, but these guys are doing a fab job.
The children’s menu is refreshing, serving exciting things like pakoras and mini roast dinners.
The cocktails and desserts are also amazing. Truly the best restaurant pub in Northampton in my opinion. Definitely book ahead.
Address: Fox and Hounds, Harlestone Rd, Lower Harlestone, Northampton NN7 4EW
This little neighbourhood gem serves amazing vegan and vegetarian dishes. A Finalist in the Northamptonshire Food & Drink Awards, you can expect high quality plant-based food served in generousness portions.
The Master Tickle Meal is one of my favourites; roasted seasonal vegetables (or paneer) cooked in a mild, rich, creamy sauce, served with more veg and nuts. It comes with their big bread (fresh garlic, coriander or chili) – Karmana’s take on naan bread. Alternatively you can have aromatic basmati rice, cooked with onions and flavoured with cloves, cardamom, cinnamon. So delicious even my meat-eating husband loves it.
Want something a little safer? They also serve things like lasagna and vegan pizza.
Karmana is loved by locals, so it often gets busy, particularly around occasions when they run special menus. Book ahead and make sure you keep an eye out for nights when they have local musicians and other creatives.

3. Beckworth Emporium
Beckworth Emporium used to be renowned for its afternoon tea, and whilst it still is, in recent years its restaurant servings have notched up a level.
Sure, last orders are at 4.30pm (3pm for specials), but you can’t go wrong with a hearty lunch here. You can’t book ahead and there’s often a queue, but it moves quickly.
Recently they’ve added a number of vegan items to the menu. The vegan katsu curry is amazing; butternut squash with quinoa and sweet potato crush crusted in a panko bread crumb, served with broccoli rice, soy and sesame bok choy and katsu curry sauce. Perfection!
Other options include paninis, burgers, jacket potatoes, salads, Sunday roast and more. I’d recommend trying the Hugo cocktail too (Prosecco poured over ice with a splash of elderflower cordial & finished with mint)!
Kids are welcome and you’ll find a spacious baby-changing facility. After your meal browse the boutique foods, gifts and plants.

4. Red Lion Yardley Hastings
The Red Lion is a cute village pub, with a modern design interior. The staff are really down to earth and lovely. The halloumi burger is a beast of a main and the pizzas are great. Children can even create their own pizza at the table, which is a nice touch.
There’s a fenced garden at the side/front so children can run about and at the rear there’s a large field if you really want to let them burn some energy! New parents are made to feel welcome with a well kitted out baby changing station.
Keep an eye out for their popular free events, like the Red Lion Festival which is usually held in the summer. Expect bouncy castles, live music and an impressive BBQ station.

Address: Red Lion, 89 High Street, Yardley Hastings, Northampton, NN7 1ER
5. Italian Restaurants in Northampton
If you’re looking for Italian restaurants in Northampton, many locals would recommend Sophia’s Restaurant. It’s in the town centre and serves Mediterranean food, including pasta, risotto, pizza and speciality dishes like veal marsala. Admittedly I’m not a massive fan of this relaxed trattoria style place, but I seem to be the odd one out.

If you want a popular alternative Italian restaurant in Northampton try GianBiaz. They pride themselves on authentic Italian meals made with high quality ingredients.
Address: 256 Wellingborough Road, Northampton, NN1 4EJ
Want to play it safe with a trusted highstreet chain? I’d recommend Prezzo for the decor, central location and good menu. You can also usually find a discount code online. It’s buggy friendly and there are baby changing facilities.

6. Les Olives
Right in the centre of Northampton, this family run restaurant serves Spanish style tapas. It specialises in small dishes that you share with your fellow diners and there’s a mixture of vegetarian and meat options. It won an OpenTable Diner’s Choice Award in 2018 and can get very busy, so make sure you book ahead. This place is a firm favourite with my sister.

7. The Swan at Lamport
The Swan at Lamport serve their thrice cooked chips in a little mesh frying pan, so you know, winning. They also offer piri piri skin on fries. The three bean enchilada is pretty good, as is the faux bun (BBQ jackfruit, pickled red cabbage and sriracha mayo).
In the summer months it’s nice sitting in the garden that has impressive views of the countryside.

8. The Smoke Pit
If you like meat, you’ll love this Northampton restaurant. The Smoke Pit’s website is titled cowpigchicken.co.uk so I’m sure that tells you all you need to know!
15 hour pulled pork, 10 hour ox cheek and Donald Rump are just some of the meaty options on offer. There are a couple of vegetarian options (tomato and mozerella ravioli, a veggie burger etc) but really it’s all about the meat here.

9. Mu Mu Northampton
This Northampton restaurant serves big burgers and completely over the top milkshakes. They also serve pizzas and creative sides.
You can smother your chips in Dr Pepper BBQ sauce or Nutella and popping candy or a multitude of other bonkers toppings! It’s the kinda place you go to hang out with friends and ignore the calories.

10. Hopping Hare
I think my dad is their number one customer as he eats there most weeks, enjoying things like roast pheasant, duo of beef and pan fried sea trout.
The Hopping Hare in Northampton serves fairly traditional food, but with a contemporary twist. They have a multitude of menus, including kids, gluten free, breakfast and more. The Hopping Hare has won numerous awards, including two AA Rosettes, so they know their stuff.

Marmaris is a well-loved Turkish restaurant in Northampton town centre. It’s a small, busy restaurant with an open kitchen so it gets hot. Diners don’t come for the decor, but the food.
The menu features a lot of meat items, but the few vegetarian options are delicious. Pick lots of little dishes like you would with tapas and share with your friends.

12. Firejacks Northampton
This popular restaurant is at Sixfields in Northampton and is beautifully designed. You can watch the chefs cooking your meals, sit next to a fire or beneath the twinkly lights near the bar.
It’s definitely better for meat-eaters, with a whole section of the menu dedicated to steaks and burgers. If you’re a fellow vegetarian there’s a sweet potato and bean burger or you can go for halloumi in a bun. Better yet, just stick to the drinks list.

13. Chinese Restaurants in Northampton
Looking for a Chinese restaurant in Northampton? The two choices that come up again and again are The Wok Inn and Oriental Paradise. The latter is next to a petrol station, so it’s not the venue that people come for, but the food.
If you’re after a freshly made Chinese takeaway that isn’t full of grease, I’d 100% recommend Happy Wok on Wellingborough Road. Just ignore the look of the restaurant! Order early as there is usually a bit of a wait, especially at weekends. It’s worth it though.
Bonus Nearby Restaurants in Northamptonshire
1. The Navigation Inn
I use this pub restaurant for special occasions. It’s set on the canal, so it’s beautiful, especially in the warmer months when you can sit outside.
They have a really good brunch menu – the sweet potato, avocado and feta hash is a favourite. Main meal options include woodfired pizzas, build your own salads, home comforts and grills. The desserts are really good, so make sure you save some room.

This is a chain and the nearest branch is at Rushden Lakes. It’s made the list because we often visit when we want to go out for a family meal. The staff are always so good with our little ones. They have highchairs, serve their drinks in novelty cups and give them stickers and crayons.
The restaurant opens out onto a wooden deck that overlooks the lake, so if the kids get restless we can easily let them run about.
The food is simple and good; pasta, pizza and grills. The desserts are excellent, especially the hot chocolate brownie with mint ice cream.
